(File A56-7W briefing)

Hawke's cabin

(eagle screeching) (hawke plays the cello)

(a Stearman flies overhead and drops a package)

Moore: (as a voiceover while Hawke reads the message) What's here is a gift. Talk costs money. I'll be at the closed-down airstrip over in Crofton in an hour. Come if you're interested.

Hawke: Saint John.

At an old airstrip

Moore: Hello, old stick. Remember me?

Hawke: Peter MacGregor Moore. How could I ever forget?

Moore: Short notice, but I thought you'd make it.

Hawke: Is my brother alive?

Moore: Ah! I said that talk costs money.

Hawke: How much money?

Moore: I'd take a trade. Say, that chopper over there.

Hawke: It's not mine.

Moore: Too bad. What about your cabin? Or maybe this wonderful art collection I've heard so much about. The years haven't improved your sense of humor, have they?

Hawke: Don't you play with me, Moore. Not about this.

Moore: I'll take $1,000 to cover my expenses.

Hawke: Agreed.

Moore: Your brother's being held in this compound. Weighs about a hundred pounds but he's basically healthy. His mind is still in good nick.

Hawke: Where?

Moore: Quon Ling province, North Vietnam. Off-course weather satellite picked him up purely by chance. Saint John is being held with 11 other Caucasians by an ex-NVA colonel named Nguyen Minh Giap. Apparently, a man who holds a grudge. Two of his prisoners are ex-Frog Legionnaires dating all the way back to Dien Bien Phu in '54. Poor sods are in their 60s.

Hawke: How'd you find out about this?

Moore: Another mercenary. He occasionally freelances for the FIRM. After we picked up the shot, we sent him in to take a closer look.

Hawke: So, the FIRM knows all about this?

Moore: Wondering why your friend Archangel didn't tell you? Don't be too hard on old Michael. He's got a task force together, ready for a rescue mission. Trained them personally at Langley so they wouldn't screw up, like they did in Iran. At the last minute, the State Department pulled the rug from under him. Last I heard, they were negotiating for a release. Now you know as much as I know. I suggest you don't tip your hand to dear Michael.

Hawke: Don't you want your money?

Moore: I had a brother once. I lost him in Rhodesia a couple of years ago. It's on the house. Even an old whore like me has a heart buried somewhere.

(Stearman takes off)

(Hawke lifts off in his chopper)

(chopper crashes)

Chopper crash site

(car screeches to a halt)

(fire crackling)

(Various voices: Over here, come on.)

Hospital

(siren wailing)

(heart beats) Nurse: It's an artery. It won't stop.

Piggy-back lV.

Rothchild: He's fibrillating! Heart paddles. Heart paddles. Stay back.

(defibrillator administers shocks)

A private floor in a hospital

(woman on PA) Dr. Greenspan to O.R. Dr. Greenspan.

(woman on PA)Oncology 629. Oncology 629.

(machine beeping)

(alarm buzzer)

(elevator door opens)

(scuffle as orderly restrains Hawke)

Simmons: Get him back. You shouldn't be here. This floor is private. Get lost. Now!

Susan: Sorry.

Simmons: I thought you said that elevator was fixed. It just came up here with someone from downstairs. Simmons Make sure it doesn't happen again.

(inside Hawke's room) Hawke: Where am I?

Simmons You're in a hospital. You were in a helicopter crash. Wait.

Hawke: How long have I been here?

Simmons Shh. Rest now. Doctor Rothchild has been called for. And he'll answer all your questions when he gets here.

Hawke: What day is this?

Simmons It's Wednesday.

Hawke: I have to make a phone call. I have to call Dom.

Simmons: You will have to wait.

Hawke: It can't wait.

Rothchild: It already has, Mr. Hawke. You've been comatose for the better part of a year. My name is Dr. Rothchild. I've been your physician for the past eight-and-a-half months.

Rothchild: Your pupiIs are working like the aperture of an expensive camera. It's a good sign.

Hawke: What is that thing?

Rothchild: This is an EEG machine. Records the electrical impuIses in the brain. It telIs us if there's been any damage done.

Hawke: There's no chance of....

Rothchild: There's always a chance when someone's been comatose for a long time. Do you remember anything of the crash?

Hawke: Bits and pieces.

Rothchild: We think that you had a heart seizure at the controIs of your helicopter. Shortly after you arrived here, you went into complete cardiac arrest. So, clinically, you were gone for several minutes.

Hawke: Did a man named, uh, Dominic Santini come to see me?

Rothchild: There's lots of news that you have to catch up on, Mr. Hawke. It's best that we move slowly.

Hawke: Doctor, that's a pretty simple question. Did Dominic come to see me?

Rothchild: Sat in that chair and he talked to you for hours on end. He was convinced you could hear him, even though you didn't answer. He was a good friend.

Hawke: What do you mean was?

Rothchild: Mr. Santini is dead.

Hawke: How?

Rothchild: He and several other men raided a prison camp in North Vietnam that was still holding Americans prisoner. Your brother, Saint John, was among them. He was rescued, but Mr. Santini and another man were killed in the process.

Hawke: Saint John's here?

Rothchild: Yes. He is on his way back from Alexandria, Virginia. We called him last night when you came to.

Hawke: When was this raid? Who's the other man?

Rothchild: The raid was ... was way back in July. The other man was a man named Coldsmith-Briggs.

Hawke: Archangel.

(outside Hawke's room) Rothchild: He's been told.

Lisa: What do you mean? You told him? Just point-blank?

Rothchild: What else could I do? He asked me straight out.

Lisa: You were wrong to overload him so quickly. We're dealing with a year of his life that's gone. It's extremely difficuIt to assimilate. I wish you'd called me first.

Rothchild If you're so concerned, Doctor, I suggest you get over there and begin the therapeutic process.

Rothchild: Do you agree? (on the phone) He's been told. No. He actually took it quite well, considering. Very strong.

(Inside Hawke's room) Male TV anchor: (on TV) From Great Britain the news of Lady Di's filing for divorce from Prince Charles has come as quite a shock to both families, as well as society columnists all over the world. Margo, what do you think about that?

Female TV anchor: Well, who could have predicted it a few months ago?

Male anchor: It seems to me, I recall seeing a tabloid on my market checkout counter that spoke of it being a possibility.

Female anchor: I wonder what her settlement will be?

Male anchor: Probably, they will split the crown jeweIs.

(TV is switched off)

(woman on PA system) Doctor Barr, 377. Doctor Barr, call 377.

Lisa: I'm Dr. Holgate. May I talk with you for a moment?

Hawke: Yeah.

Lisa: Oh. I see they've ... they've given you the articles that they were saving for you. Your emotions must be going in a lot of different directions at the moment. A good friend dead, a brother coming back as if from the dead. A year gone by without being accounted for.

Lisa: You're a shrink.

Hawke: I wondered when they'd send you in.

Lisa: You think I'm standard operating procedure, do you?

Hawke: For the FIRM you are.

Lisa: Huh-huh.

Hawke: That is who's paying for this, isn't it?

Lisa: Huh-huh.

Hawke: What the hell is that stuff they're giving me?

Lisa: Just a five-percent-glucose solution. They'll disconnect it when you start eating solid foods again.

Hawke: And what's making me so groggy?

Lisa: Well, you've been hibernating almost a year. Your metabolism has slowed down to a crawl. Your muscles have atrophied. It's the same thing up there. Your synapses slow down from lack of use. You feel groggy, loggy, punchy. You'll feel better in time. I'll come back tomorrow.

In an elevator in the hospital

(woman on PA system) Attention please. There is a blue Chevrolet blocking the emergency ambulance entrance. There is a blue Chevrolet blocking the emergency ambulance entrance.

Susan: I didn't know they were getting divorced.

St. John: Yeah, life is unpredictable, isn't it?

Susan: Yeah.

St. John: This must be your floor.

Susan: Oh, yeah. Yours, too. Doesn't go any further.

St. John: Does if you have a key.

(woman on PA system) Dr. Stevens, Pediatrics.

Susan: Bye.

St. John: Bye. Have a nice day.

(Hawke's room) Lisa: Stringfellow, you have a visitor.

St. John: Well?

Hawke: Saint John?

St. John: Yeah.

Hawke: You look great.

St. John: So do you, considering what I saw here three months ago.

(TV announcer on TV) Press representatives were called to Buckingham Palace yesterday afternoon to hear Her Majesty's press secretary read a short statement describing what many suspected and what now has been confirmed. That Prince Charles and Lady Di have called it a day. Parliament has issued a blackout.

Abrams: Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Sick. What's the world coming to?

Lisa: (laughs)

Rothchild: The brothers are getting along famously. I commend you, Dr. Holgate.

Abrams: I could talk to him tonight.

Lisa: Too soon.

Abrams: Why?

Lisa: For one thing, he's still terribly groggy. He won't be able to help you.

Abrams: Reduce his medication a little bit.

Lisa: If I did that, the whole house of cards would come tumbling down. The methods we're employing are simply not foolproof. You both seem to forget that.

Abrams: Reduce his medication. The longer the delay, the greater the external risk.

Abrams: Now, I want us all on that plane this time tomorrow.

(back at Hawke's room) St. John: You know, it's funny, but I was confined to a cell maybe a third the size of this room. But I learned to have total freedom in my mind here. I used think through some of the most incredibly detailed projects. I built a house once. It was, uh I cut every two-by-four in my mind, hammered in every nail. It was my dream house. It took me about six months to do that one.

Hawke: A bloody horror.

St. John: Yeah, but it's all over now, thanks to your friends.

Hawke: How did Dominic die?

St. John: It was quick. The unit had three choppers, two Chinooks and a Cobra for air support. Dom and Archangel were in the Cobra. They took some small-arms fire on the way out, flew about five or six more miles, then went in.

Hawke: No chance they survived?

St. John: No. It looked like napalm when they hit the ground.

St. John: Tired?

Hawke: Yeah, it's too good a day. I don't want it to end.

(woman on PA system) Doctors Levine and Patterson, please pick up your messages.

(knocking)

Rothchild: Sorry to interrupt.

St. John: No, you're not interrupting. I'm just leaving.

St. John: String would like to know when I can, uh, I can take him home.

Rothchild: I think in about a week or so. This is Morton Abrams, Mr. Hawke. Do you have the energy to talk to him for a couple of minutes?

St. John: I'll see you tomorrow.

Rothchild: I'll walk with you.

Abrams: Do you mind?

Hawke: No.

Abrams: I assume you have a pretty good idea where I'm from.

Hawke: The FIRM. Archangel's replacement.

Abrams: Hmm, not really, just the man who got his job. He was, uh, rather unique.

(woman on PA system) Doctor Levy to admitting.

Abrams: I, uh, have to clear up a few details, such as a piece of U.S. Government hardware.

Hawke: Airwolf.

Abrams: Since you don't seem to have any further use for it Now, if we could clear up this little piece of business now, I could return to Virginia tonight.

Hawke: Do you have a Las Vegas area sectional map?

Abrams: I can have one in a minute.

(keys clinking. Doors open and close)

(outside Hawke's room) Abrams: It's in the desert, a place called Valley of the Gods.

Rothchild: Excellent. That's excellent.

(woman on PA system) Oncology 629. Oncology.

Abrams: Stage One is now complete, ladies and gentlemen. I commend you all.

Moore: Your commendation will be better appreciated in the form of a nice fat check.

Abrams: I'm sure you'll be quite well-compensated, Peter.

Simmons: Should I prepare Mr. Hawke for traveling?

Abrams: Yes, our Libyan friends are dying to meet him again. Shall we begin Stage Two?

(woman on PA system) Dr. Barr, call 377. Dr. Barr.

(woman on PA system) Doctor Huggins, please call 617. Doctor Huggins, please call 617.

(a different woman on PA system) Doctor Higgins, please call 617. Doctor Higgins, please call 617.

Hawke: Hold still.

(Susan struggles) Hawke: Hold still.

Hawke: All I want from you is today's date.

Susan: Saturday, March 3.

Hawke: What year?

Hawke: Calluses.

Susan: Sure are.

Hawke: I wouldn't have calluses if I'd been in a coma for a year, would I?

Chopper crash site

(woman on radio) Control to all units, advise that a 407 occurred .

(brakes screeching)

Archangel: Looks like the vehicle had dual rear wheels.

Charlene: A truck, maybe.

Archangel: Are there any fingerprints other than Hawke's in the cockpit?

Charlene: They're trying to lift some right now.

Archangel: Dom.

Archangel: Is that the ship he borrowed?

Dominic: Yeah. Is there any sign of foul play?

Archangel: No. It's completely undamaged. Apparently, it was just landed here.

Archangel: Follow me. There's something eIse I want you to see.

Dominic: Who are they?

Marella: These three belong to an East German spy organization, Schwartzkrieg. Klaus Kinter, Else Mannheim, Eric Maas. Anastasia Zarkov, Russian. She's a specialist in things psychological as they apply to the intelligence trade. Over the past couple of years she's been quite active in behavior-modifying drug research.

Marella: Patrick MacGregor Moore, English. A mercenary who'll work for anybody with change in their pocket. Right, left, or center, their political persuasion means nothing to him in any way.

Dominic: Well, uh, what's all these got to do with Stringfellow Hawke?

Archangel: Two weeks ago, Army intelligence stumbled onto the fact that this happy group had arrived in the States. Obviously, they were on a mission of some kind.

Archangel: There's reason to believe that they're working for Mustapha Kamal.

Dominic: So?

Archangel: So if you had to speculate, what single thing would Qaddafi like to get his hands on more than anything else in the world?

Dominic: Come on, quit your kidding, will you? Airwolf, of course.

Archangel: Exactly. Then Hawke disappears. 24 hours later we find his helicopter out here in a field in the middle of nowhere.

Dominic: You think he had a run-in with these guys?

Archangel: I'd bet on it. Dominic, you know where Airwolf is. You've got to tell me.

Dominic: Uh-huh.

Archangel: It could fall into the very worst possible hands.

Dominic: I can't. I gave String my word.

Archangel: Right now, there is no String. He's been gone over 30 hours. That's why that chopper is just sitting out there in the middle of nowhere.

Dominic: Well, how do I know this isn't some kind of fancy scam to get me to tell you where Airwolf is?

Marella: Because it doesn't make any sense. You know what arrangements we have with Hawke. We're on his side.

Dominic: Well, that was yesterday. What about today? You people have a funny way of changing sides to suit your needs, you know.

Marella: I resent that.

Dominic: Oh?

Archangel: Marella. Marella. Dominic, we're not just talking about Airwolf. We're talking about Hawke's life. You've got to trust me.

Dominic: I don't. No. I don't.

Archangel: Dominic!

Hospital

(Hawke's room) Susan: I'm not with them, whoever they are.

Hawke: Maybe. But Saint John is. That doesn't make any sense.

(woman on PA system) Hematology, 1-11. Hematology, 1-11.

Hawke: Unless.

Susan: Unless what?

Hawke: If you're lying to me, you're dead.

Susan: I'm not lying.

Hawke: I hope not.

Rothchild: Good morning. Else!

(another room in the hospital)

Susan: Who are they?

Hawke: My brother, Saint John.

Susan: Which one?

Hawke: What?

Susan: Which one is your brother Saint John? There are two photos.

Hawke: That's Saint John.

Susan: No, no, these are two different men.

(video of crash scene. Voices in background: Hey, come on. Quick, quick.)

Hawke: There never was a crash. They just wanted me to think so. Saint John is not back.

Susan: What is it? Brainwashing or something like that?

Hawke: Something like that. I told them exactly what they wanted me to tell them.

Susan: What did you tell them?

Hawke: The location of a very important piece of military hardware.

Susan: Are they spies? Do you work for the government or something?

(door opens noisily) St. John: Nothing that patriotic. Hawke here, he works for himself. Himself and the, uh, FIRM, I should say. Right, brother dear?

(Susan struggles) St. John: I'll blow her away. Let's go.

Outside Hospital at an ambulance

St. John: All right, brother. Why not live a little longer?

Hawke: If you wanted me dead, I'd already be there.

Maas (formerly Abrams): There is a bonus if we get you to Libya alive.

Hawke: I should've died in that copter crash.

Maas: There was no crash. Your helicopter was pre-rigged with a radio control device and landed beautifully by MacGregor.

Hawke: What made me pass out?

Moore: The photograph I gave you was soaked in a chemical. Nasty chemical. Enters the bloodstream right through the skin. I was wearing gloves, remember?

Hawke: What about her? She's not part of this. Why don't you let her go?

Maas: I don't think so, Hawke. She might prove too valuable.

(ambulance doors shut and it drives off)

(C130 engines start and it takes off)

Susan: That's not going to work. You might as well relax.

Hawke: Harry Houdini did it.

Susan: Why Libya?

Hawke: I vacationed there once.

Susan: You vacationed in Libya?

Susan: You think we'll go nonstop?

Hawke: No, I got a stopover in Cuba or maybe Nicaragua.

Susan: I hope it's Cuba. I always wanted a Caribbean vacation. Do you do things like this everyday?

Valley of the Gods

Maas: There! There it is! Is that smooth enough for you to set down?

Moore: I should think so. Yes.

Moore: Brace yourselves!

(C130 lands)

Moore: How'd you like to be untied, Stringfellow?

Hawke: In exchange for what?

Moore: A little flying, just five minutes' worth.

Hawke: I don't think so.

(guns are cocked)

Hawke: You can't shoot me. No one else can get Airwolf out of the lair.

Maas: You're right, Hawke. We wouldn't shoot you.

(inside the Wolf's Lair)

(Airwolf's doors open) Moore: This is bloody awesome.

Hawke: Yeah.

(Airwolf engines start. Music. Airwolf lifts off.)

(winch motor. Airwolf is dragged on board the C130.)

Maas: Let's go.

Susan: That's what they were after? All this for a lousy helicopter?

Hawke: Yeah.

(cargo ramp closes)

On board the C130

(cockpit) Kinter (formerly Rothchild): How long to reach international waters?

Moore: Fifteen minutes to the gulf. Three more and we're 12 miles out. The escort will join us there.

Kinter: Fantastic.

(in the cabin) Susan: (whispering) Hawke.

St. John: Relax, brother.

Hawke: Um, why don't you let me loosen her straps? We can't go anywhere now.

st. John: Then she won't need her arms free, will she?

Hawke: Uh, how about you, Freda? You wanna be a little sympathetic?

Else (formerly Simmons): You could go back into yours.

Hawke: Not likely.

Dominic: Don't move or the next word you say could be goodbye.

(cockpit) Moore: Time to call up the escort.

Maas: (on radio) Perro Uno, Perro Uno, [???] por favor.

(cabin) Dominic: So, I didn't know what to do. So, I, uh, flew out to the Valley and hid in Airwolf and I waited.

Hawke: How long were you going to wait?

Dominic: Long as it took.

Susan: Now what?

Hawke: Well, looks like we're gonna miss our Mediterranean vacation.

Susan: It is the tourist season.

Dominic: Aah.

(cockpit)

(jet fighters approach)

Kinter: Here they come.

Maas: Damn it, we did it.

(alarm beeps)

Moore: Rear cargo doors. It could be trouble.

Maas: I'll go take a look.

Air combat sequence

(cabin of C130. Whooshing sound. Music. Airwolf is extracted from the cabin by a parachute)

(on board Airwolf) Hawke: Release the drag chute.

Hawke: Engage both engines.

Dominic: Both at once?

Hawke: Now! Cut the chute away.

(on the C130)

Maas: (speaking Spanish)

MIG pilot: (speaking Spanish)

(Airwolf) Dominic: We've have some MiGs on our tail.

Hawke: Pop a Sun Burst.

(Sunburst deploys.)

(missile splashes in the sea)

(Airwolf fires a missile. MIG explodes.)

(missile is heading for Airwolf)

(turbos)

(on the C130)

Maas: No!

(C130 explodes)

(Airwolf launches another missile. MIG explodes.)

(And another missile. Another MIG explodes.)

(on Airwolf) Hawke: Where's that other MiG?

Dominic: They're heading home. They've had it!

Hawke: That makes two of us. Let's go home.

Hawke's cabin

Hawke: You don't have a home of your own?

Marella:Of course we do. And offices in a half-dozen locations.

Hawke: Then how come you're always here?

Archangel: You flew in with Dom. Didn't he tell you that we found your helicopter in the desert?

Hawke: Yeah.

Marella: Well?

Hawke: Well what?

Marella: Well, what happened? Did the Schwartzkrieg grab you? Did they get Airwolf? I mean, is it safe? Are they still in the country?

Hawke: I don't know. Yes. No. In that order.

Marella: Good.

Archangel: How'd you get away?

Susan: He dumped his helicopter out of the back of a cargo plane.

Archangel: You had a civilian with you?

Susan: I'm no civilian, I'm a nurse.

Hawke: Susan helped me escape.

Archangel: So she knows where Airwolf is hidden?

Susan: Is that what you call his helicopter?

Hawke: We didn't tell her the name.

Dominic: We thought we'd keep that from her.

Archangel: So, she knows where it is?

Susan: Sorta.

Archangel: Sorta?

Susan: Well Should I tell him?

Hawke: I don't think so.

Dominc: You're right, String. Michael's such a blabbermouth.

Archangel: This isn't humorous.

Susan: Oh. Hey, look. I really don't know. I saw a lot of snow and a lot of scenery and it all went by very fast. Besides, I was asleep when we landed.

Archangel: Thank God.

Susan: Sorta.

(all laugh)
