Backalleys, a Chinatown in some city

HAWKE: Excuse me.

TOMMY: Hold it! Move before you get hurt.

(SPEAKING THAI)

HAWKE: Thank you, Tommy.

(MEN CHATTERING)

HAWKE: See what he's got.

ARCHANGEL: Not so much as a fare-thee-well, Hawke?

ARCHANGEL: Show him the photographs.

(SPEAKING THAI)

ARCHANGEL: He wants the money first. These refugees know the value of cash on the barrelhead.

(SPEAKING THAI)

ARCHANGEL: The price was agreed.

ARCHANGEL: He wants $2,000 now.

HAWKE: That's par for the course.

(MAN LAUGHING)

HAWKE: If he has what I want, it's worth it.

ARCHANGEL: Show it to him.

ARCHANGEL: You're always saying the Firm's never done anything for you.

ARCHANGEL: Keep on saying it.

HAWKE: That's him. That's Saint John.

ARCHANGEL: I couldn't tell. The photograph's so grainy. The figure's in shadow.

HAWKE: I know my own brother.

ARCHANGEL: Sometimes we see what we want to see, Hawke. Anyway, that prison camp isn't even government. It belongs to some local warlord. But it's deep in Laos. Politically, it's information we can't act on. However, if you know someone who can...

ARCHANGEL: Good luck, Hawke.

HAWKE: Michael. Thank you.

ARCHANGEL: For what?

TOMMY: Laos is communist territory. One of the most heavily armed countries on earth.

HAWKE: I've been waiting for this the better part of my life. I'd go through hell to get Saint John out.

(SPEAKING THAI)

Hawke's cabin

DOMINIC: There's so many communist troops in that place, it'll take a whole Marine division to crack them.

HAWKE: What if we put together a small, specialized unit? Just zip right in there, snatch him out and be gone.

DOMINIC: Yeah? And what about supplies, ammunition? Where you gonna get them?

HAWKE: I'll sell a painting. Hell, I'll sell them all if I have to.

DOMINIC: Well, it might just work. If you had John Wayne with you. (SCOFFS) Where are you gonna find a bunch of guys who are trained in this kind of stuff on such short notice?

At a racing circuit

ANNOUNCER: Well, we're down to the final laps of the last heat, ladies and gentlemen. It's been one of the toughest, and a grueling season for these men.

ANNOUNCER: Number 3 Mike Willamite takes a header of the bumps leaving the field wide open for the number 2 and 3 man.

ANNOUNCER: The track is heating up as we get into the last lap. Now, 16, Lancaster pulls up to the third pole position as these three fight it out for dominance in the Olive County dirt bike rally.

ANNOUNCER: It's been a thrilling night for all the competitors as well as the fans, who've followed them from the beginning. And the winner is Sebastian Robmiger-Kinney.

ANNOUNCER: Robmiger was hiding there throughout the season, never placing higher than second with his sheer determination. And let's hope this works more experienced riders...

KEARNS: I don't know, Hawke. It's been over 10 years since I handled an M-16. Now, we've changed a lot since Nam. Now, I don't mean slowed down. I mean just changed.

DOMINIC: He sure could use you.

(SIGHS)

KEARNS: When do we go?

(CHUCKLING)

Hotel room at a convention center

WALLACE ON TV: And this great nation of ours has always cherished its many national resources. Let us not just preserve our environment, but enhance it for the benefit of all our future generations. It is the one legacy we must pass on to our children and to our children's children for all time. Thank you.

(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING)

WALLACE ON TV: Thank you.

DOMINIC: Are you kidding? The next senator of this state is coming.... No way.

KEARNS: He owes as much to Saint John as the rest of us. Maybe more.

HAWKE: We need him. Gary Wallace can get us visas, permits. Without his political help, things will be a lot tougher. He was one of us once. Maybe he won't forget.

WALLACE: Hell, I'm glad that's over. So, it's good to see you guys again. Really is.

DOMINIC: My name is Dominic Santini.

WALLACE: Nice to meet you, sir.

DOMINIC: How are you?

WALLACE: Fine, thanks.

WALLACE: Hawke, I've given your plan a lot of thought.

HAWKE: Did you buy it?

WALLACE: I just can't go along with it.

HAWKE: We got a few bumps to work out.

WALLACE: There's not a chance in a million you'll pull it off.

HAWKE: Well, we'll do it somehow.

WALLACE: Hey, come on, Hawke, stop it. This is complete madness. It just cannot be done. Handful of men against an entire garrison? Come on!

HAWKE: No explanations or apologies. Good to see you again.

DOMINIC: Good luck, Senator.

WALLACE: Hey, wait a minute, huh? You guys'll never get back without me.

(SCOFFING)

KEARNS: Hey, it's going to be a ball.

HAWKE: Yeah, right, right, right.

(ALL LAUGHING) Come on.

In the woods somewhere

HAWKE: This is a replica of the camp that we've reconstructed from two-month-old surveillance photos.

KEARNS: Two months? Everything could've changed by now. You know, more guards. You know how they moved us around. The prisoners, they might not even be there.

HAWKE: We know where they are. Before we move, we'll have up-to-date reconnaissance. You got any other questions?

WALLACE: Yeah, I got a couple. Like, who's gonna take out these guard towers?

HAWKE: I'll handle it.

WALLACE: And the guard barracks? Helicopter pad, armed jeeps, snipers, ground fire. You're going to handle all that, too?

HAWKE: Yeah, I got it covered.

WALLACE: String, call this madness off before it's too late.

KEARNS: He's right, Hawke. It's impossible.

HAWKE: I told you, I'll handle it.

(SIGHS)

KEARNS: You're right, Wallace. There's no way Hawke could cover all that.

(ENGINE HUMMING)

KEARNS: What the hell?

(GUNS AND ROCKETS FIRE)

(TURBOS)

(CHUCKLING)

KEARNS: Well, what are we all waiting for? Let's go get Saint John.

Onboard Airwolf, enroute

DOMINIC.: We've got Tonkin Bay to the north. We're on course for Laos.

HAWKE: Well, there's the Mekong Delta. For better or worse. We're in Laos. Keep a sharp eye out for bogeys.

HAWKE: Start cameras.

HAWKE: Run infrared thermal standards.

DOMINIC: Infrared, thermal and standard.

(BUZZING)

(BEEPING)

DOMINIC: All strokes tracking.

(MECHANICAL WHIRRING)

HAWKE: How does it look?

DOMINIC: Done. Let's get out of here. We can analyze later.

HAWKE: I'm gonna go in. I've gotta find out what they really got.

DOMINIC: I knew it, I knew it. You just couldn't resist it.

HAWKE: Oh, pray for me, Mother.

DOMINIC: Just keep it bolted to the treetops, partner. I don't want to spend any time in a Laotian jail for invading their sovereign airspace.

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

DOMINIC: You've seen enough? Let's get out of here.

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

DOMINIC: They're well-armed. At least we learned that.

DOMINIC: Now, I just want to know how you plan on getting into that camp.

HAWKE: Walk.

Bangkok, Thailand

DOMINIC: Here they are.

WALLACE: Here we are.

HAWKE: Hey.

HAWKE: Did you ever think you'd see this place again?

WALLACE: No. Hi. How are you?

KEARNS: Just like R and R, right, Wallace?

WALLACE: You bet.

HAWKE: Hey, let's get your stuff stowed in the hotel here. I'll take you over to meet Chin Mao.

WALLACE: Let's do it.

(CAR HORNS HONKING)

(PEOPLE CHATTERING)

KEARNS: Tom yum kung!

(CLEARS THROAT)

DOMINIC: This stuff is pretty good.

HAWKE: Hey, Wallace. Relax. Enjoy the surroundings while you still have a chance, huh?

WALLACE: Well, even in Bangkok, four Americans with a warehouse full of weapons could draw a bit of attention.

DOMINIC: He's right. If we ever get caught, we could spend the rest of our lives in a Bangkok jail following elephants with a shovel.

WALLACE: Well, I'm in favor of starting as soon as we can.

KEARNS: Ditto. This Thai brew hasn't gotten any worse over the years, has it?

HAWKE: Neither has she.

CHARMAINE: It's been a long time, Hawke.

HAWKE: Too long.

HAWKE: Gentlemen, meet Charmaine Beaucaire.

HAWKE: This is Jack Kearns.

KEARNS: Hello.

HAWKE: Gary Wallace.

WALLACE: Hello.

CHARMAINE: Hello.

HAWKE: And Dominic Santini.

DOMINIC: Enchante. Would you care to sit?

CHARMAINE: No. Merci, Monsieur Santini. Merci beaucoup.

CHARMAINE: It's a small team for what you have in mind, Hawke.

HAWKE: That's why we need an expert guide.

HAWKE: Gentlemen, meet Chin Mao.

Bangkok Warehouse

(MUSIC PLAYING ON RADIO)

(RATTLING, CRATES OPENING)

WALLACE: I tell you, I think Kearns would be late for his own funeral. He probably got himself in trouble.

CHARMAINE: If the Thai police have him, we'll never get him out in time for this mission.

(KEARNS SINGING)

KEARNS: You know a better cover than being an American tourist?

(METALLIC CLANGING)

KEARNS: Shovels?

KEARNS: Now that's the kind of farm work I like.

KEARNS: Well, what do we have here?

HAWKE: Okay. Since none of you have to be here, I'd like to just take a second to tell you thanks.

HAWKE: Tomorrow we're gonna go in and get Saint John and any other Americans we can out of that camp. But I'll tell you, there's nobody else on earth I'd rather go in with.

(BANGING ON DOOR)

HAWKE: Hey, you guys, get those weapons loaded, now.

(BANGING ON DOOR)

HAWKE: Hurry up! Get it. Let's go.

CHARMAINE: Qui est là? (Who is there?)

(MAN SPEAKING FRENCH)

CHARMAINE: Customs.

HAWKE: Stall them.

(SPEAKING THAI)

CUSTOMS OFFICIAL: Very interesting group.

CHARMAINE: Is there a problem here?

CUSTOMS OFFICIAL: I want to check your equipment.

CHARMAINE: Oh, it's just farm equipment for my chateau in the country.

HAWKE: Your friend got something against agriculture?

CUSTOMS OFFICIAL: Very interesting vehicle for tourists.

HAWKE: Kearns, why don't you show him how it works?

CUSTOMS OFFICIAL: Stop!

(GRUNTS)

(SIREN WAILING)

(MEN SHOUTING)

KEARNS: Hop in! Come on, let's go, let's go, let's go!

KEARNS: Keep your head down. We're out of here. Let's go!

Laos

(ENGINE HUMMING)

HAWKE: Let's go.

HAWKE: Punji sticks.

WALLACE: For hunting?

KEARNS: These can't be left over from the war.

HAWKE: No, they're new.

CHARMAINE: Whoever put them there is saying, "Any further, and you risk your life."

WALLACE: Yeah, but who'd bother? This is nothing but a freeway for lizards and rats.

HAWKE: Why don't you ask him?

HAWKE: Don't anybody move.

KEARNS: I ain't even gonna breathe.

(BANDIT LEADER SPEAKING THAI)

Bandit camp

(BIRDS CAWING)

(PEOPLE CHATTERING)

(PEOPLE EXCLAIMING)

(MAN ORDERING IN THAI)

(BANDIT KING SPEAKING THAI)

CHARMAINE: He asks if you are American mercenaries.

HAWKE: No. We're combat archaeologists on a field trip.

(CHARMAINE SPEAKS THAI)

(BANDIT KING REPLIES IN THAI)

(CHUCKLING)

HAWKE: What'd he say?

CHARMAINE: Something to me which I will not translate.

Well, you tell him I don't care for his hospitality.

(SPEAKING THAI)

HAWKE: You can also tell him if he doesn't get his act together, I'm not gonna do business with him.

(SPEAKS THAI)

(SPEAKS THAI)

CHARMAINE: He says, "What is this business, before I kill you?"

HAWKE: American POWs. Prisoners of war.

(SPEAKS THAI)

HAWKE: Tell him, if he knows where they are, I'll pay him in American money.

(SPEAKS THAI)

(SPEAKS THAI)

CHARMAINE: He wants to know where the money is.

HAWKE: First we deal. To show good faith.

(PEOPLE MURMURING)

HAWKE: There's more.

(SPEAKS THAI)

(PEOPLE MURMURING)

HAWKE: Much more. Thousands.

(GRUNTING)

(SPEAKING THAI)

Nightime near the prison camp

(BIRD SCREECHING)

(CHARMAINE SPEAKING FRENCH: boeuf bourguignon....)

CHARMAINE: So terribly continental.

(CHUCKLING)

HAWKE: (IN FRENCH ACCENT) You know, nothing but the best for my team.

KEARNS: Well, where's the champagne, hmm?

HAWKE: Don't you worry about it. We get Saint John out tomorrow, we'll be swimming in it.

KEARNS: To Saint John.

WALLACE: Yeah.

HAWKE: Huh?

CHARMAINE: I'll drink to that. To...

(CHUCKLING)

(ALL CHUCKLING)

HAWKE: Well, it's about time.

CHARMAINE: Are we glad to see you.

DOMINIC: Hell, I got her all bedded down. She's camouflaged and fueled up and ready to go.

WALLACE: Then tomorrow we do it.

DOMINIC: Yep. Tomorrow.

Dawn, the raid

KEARNS: Nice and peaceful.

HAWKE: Let's go.

KEARNS: Wallace.

(VEHICLE PASSING)

(GRUNTING)

(THUDDING)

KEARNS: (WHISPERING) Wallace, come on.

HAWKE: They're Asians. Where are the Americans?

WALLACE: Let's get out of here. It's a trap.

HAWKE: They're prisoners.

WALLACE: The Cong know we're here.

(PANTING)

KEARNS: The Cong? What's the matter with you, Wallace?

WALLACE: They always know. Come on. Let's get out of here.

(PANTING)

(MAN SPEAKING VIETNAMESE)

(GROANING)

WALLACE: I can't stand it anymore. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, man, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It was me, Kearnsie.

KEARNS: What do you mean? What was you? I sold you out.

KEARNS: What?

WALLACE: I sold you out, man. I told them about the... I told them about the break. The tunnel, I told them where it was.

KEARNS: You buried me in that hellhole for another year?

WALLACE: I just couldn't stand it anymore.

KEARNS: We had the tunnel finished. We were home.

WALLACE: I just thought if I came back here, I'd make it up.

KEARNS: Nothing you do is gonna make up for all you did, Wallace.

HAWKE: No!

(MACHINE GUN FIRING)

(SOLDIERS CLAMORING)

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

(SOLDIERS SHOUTING)

(GUNS FIRING)

HAWKE: Dom, come in. Come in, Dom. We're pinned down. Come in.

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

WALLACE: I bit my tongue until it bled. I tried to pass out. I tried.

KEARNS: We all almost broke, but we didn't.

WALLACE: I was too weak.

KEARNS: Oh, no. No way.

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

CHARMAINE: They're moving the prisoners out.

(AIRWOLF ENGINE HUMMING)

KEARNS: All right.

HAWKE: Move!

KEARNS: Not him. He left us here. To hell with him.

HAWKE: I need him. I need all of you. Let's go.

HAWKE: Let's get those prisoners moved out.

HAWKE: Watch it! Let's go.

HAWKE: Come on, move it!

HAWKE: Kearns!

KEARNS: Come on, get in, get in, get in!

KEARNS: We did it, Hawke, we did it!

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

Egress

DOMINIC: Saint John?

HAWKE: We didn't get him. I think he's in that truck.

HAWKE: We got to cut him off before they get to that bridge. We'll be facing whole division. We'll never get him back.

DOMINIC: I don't show them. The river road's a blank.

HAWKE: No, they're down there. Just keep scanning.

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

CHARMAINE: We'll never knock them out with small arms.

KEARNS: We need Hawke and that chopper.

WALLACE: We can't wait for Hawke.

KEARNS: Wallace!

KEARNS: Wallace!

(MACHINE GUNS FIRING)

CHARMAINE: Wallace!

KEARNS: What the hell are you doing? Wallace!

HAWKE: There they are.

HAWKE: It's an old plantation road. They're almost to the river.

(GUN FIRING)

HAWKE: I'm gonna blow the road in front of us.

DOMINIC: Careful, String. What if Saint John is in that truck?

HAWKE: Give me the guns.

(GUNS FIRING)

HAWKE: Saint John.

HAWKE: Saint John Hawke. First Air Cav. Where is he?

ROACH: They took the others away just after the rains.

HAWKE: When? Where?

ROACH: Don't know. Gone. All gone.

KEARNS: Saint John?

CHARMAINE: Oh, Hawke.

(GUN FIRING)

HAWKE: Let's get them out of here. Come on! Here! Let's go! Go!

(GUNS FIRING)

HAWKE: Get going! Drive!

(AIR COMBAT SEQUENCE-MUSIC) CHARMAINE: We're out of here.

HAWKE: I'm not leaving without Saint John.

DOMINIC: Another time, String.

HAWKE: (ON SPEAKER) Saint John.

(SIGHS)

HAWKE: If you can you hear me, this is your brother, String. I'm coming back. Pal, I swear to God, I'm coming back.

Funeral for Wallace

MAN: Aim! Up. Aim. Up. Aim. Up.

MAN: Order out. Present. Out.

(BUGLE PLAYING LAST POST)

DOMINIC: Hell of a eulogy.

KEARNS: Yeah. And I thought he was a coward. But he sure died a hero.

HAWKE: Well, Cong made him crack one time. But what about all the other times? He was a hero.

KEARNS: Anybody want a beer?

DOMINIC: Too many calories.

HAWKE: Hey, Kearns?

HAWKE: Maybe just one.

DOMINIC: You know, they say, (SPEAKING ITALIAN), "He who drinks with old friends never puts on weight." That's an old ltalian saying, you know.

KEARNS: Yeah?

HAWKE: Old Italian named Santini.

(ALL LAUGHING)
